Considering a Feature Wall? Here’s What Installers Want You to Know

Feature Wall
Decorative and visually stunning, feature walls are a wonderful way to invigorate the look and feel of your home. In fact, adding a feature wall to your space can completely transform a room, and it can do it easily and affordably — no extensive renovations required.

This said, in our decades of working as GTA and Mississauga flooring installers, we can attest to the fact that not every wall is meant to be a feature wall and not every wall that could be a feature wall should be a feature wall.

Confused? Don’t worry. We’re going to clear things up.

Here are the big dos and don’ts of installing a feature wall.

The Dos and Don’ts of Installing a Feature Wall

DO. Choose With Purpose

A feature wall is meant to accent a room’s focal point. This could be a fireplace, a TV or in a bedroom, the wall behind a headboard. Just don’t randomly select a wall or it may throw your space off balance.

DON’T. Put a Feature Wall in a Small Room

A feature wall in a small room will make the space look even smaller. If you want to add personality to a small room, like a powder room or laundry nook, consider a backsplash or elongating herringbone tiling.

DO. Choose a Complimentary Theme and Colour(s)

While some design styles can blend together beautifully, like bohemian and farmhouse, others don’t, like farmhouse and industrial. So, while you don’t have to have a dedicated design theme, you do have to have an eye for what meshes.

Likewise for colours. Your feature wall doesn’t need to match any particular element in your room, but it does need to complement it. Combining jewel tones with neutrals can work wonderfully, but combining neutrals with neon is a design disaster.

DON’T. Overcrowd

A feature wall needs room to breathe and create impact. It can’t do this in an overly crowded room — especially if the crowding is happening on the vertical plane.

The feature wall is the work of art — it shouldn’t be surrounded by pictures and paintings and other wall art.

DO. Use Premium Materials!

While paint and wallpaper are simple and effective ways to do a feature wall, they are among your most basic design options. Add more texture, light, and dimension to your feature wall by using materials like tile, glass, natural stone, reclaimed wood. Mosaics — even simple mosaics — are an absolutely unforgettable way to do a feature wall.

DON’T. Fear Open Spaces!

Feature walls are made for open concept rooms. They’re an excellent way to not only increase the space’s wow-factor but on a more practical level, to divide the rooms.

For instance, if you have an open space living and dining room, adding a feature wall to the dining area will highlight this space, creating the illusion of separate rooms.

DO. Enlist Help When You Need It

All eyes are going to be on your feature wall, so it’s important that it looks amazing. This is not the time to try your hand at tiling a mosaic if you’ve never worked with this medium before. It may not even be the time to try your hand at tiling, period, if you’ve never done it before. You’ll save time and money in the long-run if you enlist professional services–or at least professional guidance before you start.

Try new things, to be sure, but in our time as Mississauaga flooring installers, we advise people to save new types of DIY projects for less conspicuous spaces and large scale projects, like the laundry room backsplash or the powder room flooring.
